Our Town

Rotherham Town Centre Sign

Our Town

Rotherham is a large industrial town of just over 250,000 people in the north of England.  Founded in the early Middle Ages as a village on the banks of the River Rother, the town grew as a consequence of the commissioning of Jesus College by Thomas Rotherham, the Archbishop of York, in the 1480s.

Though the college only lasted for around 60 years, Rotherham was later discovered to be lying above rich seams of coal and iron ore.  This ensured that Rotherham became a significant part of the industrial revolution and expanded rapidly as coal mining and steel production became the principle industries in the town.  Though the mining and steel industries declined during the 1980s, the Magna Centre remains as a testimony to the history of the town.

Hope Church Rotherham is committed to the peace, welfare and prosperity of the town.

Our History

Hope Church Rotherham is a growing, friendly, family church affiliated to the British Assemblies of God.  In 2004 a church plant and a separate house church that had been ministering in Rotherham for many years, joined together to become known as ‘The Hope of Rotherham Christian Church’.  This community of believers has been meeting in various premises throughout Rotherham.  The name was changed to ‘Hope Church’ and in October 2013 they secured their first ever church property near the centre of Rotherham on Grove Road. In May 2023 the church moved to Clifton Community School for Sunday services, and the Unity Centre for most mid-week events.
